The Handmaid’s Tale
This dark and brilliant series is destined to be one of the best shows of the year. Don't miss it. This adaptation is one of the best things you'll see on screen this year thanks to first-rate writing, outstanding performances, and gorgeous cinematography. There's hope underneath all of the oppression due to the strength of the characters, and episodes aren't just hours of misery from start to finish.
One of Hollywood's most delicious pieces of folklore is here re-processed into absolute entertainment gold as Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange slip into the layered frocks of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford respectively. Feud captures the cruelty of the ecosystem that needed those two to hate each other as much as they almost did - and the naked capitalism that fomented it.
There are so many interesting storylines in the first season. The plot keeps getting wilder and more bizarre throughout the season. People will be surprised once they see where it's all heading. Between the bags of dollar bills, bullet-holed foreheads, and two stellar performances by both Betty and Veronica, there are enough pieces for Riverdale to pass the midtown replacement test.
One Day at a Time
If One Day At A Time can elevate its comedy to match the more serious moments, it just might become the kind of groundbreaking television show the original was. One Day at a Time turns out to be a stunning reclamation of the kind of joke-laden but earnestly confrontational comedy that made so many '70s and '80s sitcoms great. It will make you laugh and give you goosebumps and warp your sense of time.
It is a muddle, a beautifully styled, scary, and withholding muddle that can't easily be placed in a specific time period. Beautifully crafted, occasionally incoherent, often challenging and insistently demanding, but what's not entirely clear in the early episodes is whether the payoff will be worth all the trouble. Legion is truly a one-of-a-kind adaptation that's basically Marvel-adjacent, also drawing inspiration from other media.
